R.I. DOT outlines preliminary schedule for future MBTA service to Warwick

16 August, 2010

PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Department of Transportation clarified Friday a preliminary schedule for commuter trains headed to the new Warwick station connected to T.F. Green Airport. A candidate for Warwick mayor had released a statement Friday presumably saying a schedule had been agreed upon.

DOT spokesman Charles St. Martin said the final train schedule has yet to be signed off on by Amtrak, which controls the rails, the DOT, which is building the station, or the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, which operates the trains.

The schedule was discussed, not approved, at a meeting Thursday, St. Martin said.

That proposed schedule would include two so-called “reverse commute” trains running from Providence to Warwick in the morning. Also in the morning three trains will originate in Warwick and continue to Boston, stopping at the Providence station on the way.

In the evening, three trains starting from Boston will run to Warwick, stopping at Providence along the way. In addition, three evening trains will operate from Warwick to Providence.

In a news release, Richard Langseth, a candidate for Warwick mayor, hailed the ability of people to commute into Warwick by train.

“Without this reverse commute rail service, the dream of linking the airport to Providence for airline passengers going to and from the airport, and, just as importantly, for airline terminal support workers commuting to and from their jobs at the airport, would have been dashed,” he said.

Trains are expected to start running to the Warwick station in the fall.
