Start A Business And Get A Business Enterprise Degree at the University of Buckingham
Last years post about the “Entrepreneur Degree” generated quite a bit of interest. However it turns out not to be the first such degree, that honour belongs to the Business Enterprise Degree at the University of Buckingham, here’s what Nigel Adams the Programme Director Business Enterprise at the University of Buckingham Business School has to say about the course:
The next annual in-take for the innovative BSc Business Enterprise (BBE) honours degree at the University of Buckingham is only a few weeks away, in January 2010. So if you want to start a business and achieve an honours degree in just two years, please contact Nigel Adams at the university’s Business School (nigel.adams@buckingham.ac.uk).
In the first two terms you will study a range of business subjects, including Marketing, Accounting and Business Planning, plus Entrepreneurship and Innovation. By the end of May 2010 you will have to prepare and submit your business plan and must also “pitch” your business idea in front of the “Buckingham Angels” venture capital panel.
If your business plan and “pitch” are successful and you also pass your first examinations, held in June, your company will be established and provided with “seed-corn” capital of up to £5000 to operate and develop the business. In the following 18 months, you will run the business, whilst also continuing to study a wide range of business enterprise subjects.
Although the programme involves practical work, academic rigour is vital to ensure that the quality of the honours degrees awarded is maintained. In addition to the study of traditional Business School subjects, other activities are included, such as learning about working with customers, partners, suppliers, bankers, accountants, government organisations and venture capital providers.
Experience in running the programme has shown us that it is essential to involve external entrepreneurs and business people with our students throughout the two years. This means that the entrepreneurs not only make interactive presentations to you, but are also available as long-term mentors.
At the end of the programme, you will have the opportunity to buy the business from the university, at a reasonable cost and continue its development.
Examples of the types of businesses run by BBE students can be seen on this webpage: http://is.gd/4de5X
In addition to school leavers, mature students find the BBE programme useful, as it is completed in just two years. Mature students also find that they don’t feel “out of place”, as many similar people are studying in Buckingham, the UK’s only independent university.

Sounds good to me. I’d love to hear (more) about the experience of those who have done the course.
