Credit Card Offers: Citibank Credit Cards

31 March, 2010

So far, we’ve taken a look at PenFed credit cards, and Chase credit cards, and today marks the CitiBank credit card offers installment of the weekly Saturday review of current offers from major banks. This series is designed to compare cards and features that are currently available.

Citi Platinum Select MasterCard

The Citi Platinum Select MasterCard is a low rate credit card that comes with some impressive benefits. First, the card currently offers a 0% APR introductory offer for up to 15 months for purchase and balance transfers. This is the longest 0% introductory offer that I am aware of.

Another benefit of the card is its low ongoing interest rate, which could be as low as 11.99% variable. The Citi Platinum Select Card has no annual fee. The card comes with Citi Identity Theft Solutions (remember those clever commercials with victims speaking with the voices of their identity thieves) and $0 liability on unauthorized purchases.

While the Citi Platinum Select Card does not has a traditional rewards program where you earn points and redeem them for “stuff”, they offer a free program called Citi Extra Cash. The program works by card holders earning points using the card, and using points as discounts on certain item purchases – such as international airlines or hotel partners. Even without this program however, the low ongoing interest and 0% APR terms alone make the Citi Platinum Select card stand out among all card issuers.

Citi Forward Card

Citi Forward is a rewards credit card and a balance transfer credit card rolled up in one.

The Citi Forward Card allows you to earn rewards points over time (5 reward points for book, movie, music and restaurant purchases, and 1 reward point for everything else). You also receive more rewards when you use your credit wisely, including 100 bonus points each billing period when you pay on time and stay under your credit line. There’s also a 6,000 point signup bonus when you spend $250 within 3 months of card receipt, and 2,500 “go paperless” bonus if you forgo printed statements.

What is unique about the card is that it adapts to your card activity, and rewards good behavior. You reduce your purchase APR by .25% each time you make a purchase, stay under your credit line, and pay on time for 3 billing periods in a row – up to a total of 8 times (or 2% through the time your account is open).

There is no annual fee for the Citi Forward Card and 0% APR for 7 months on purchases and balance transfers. There is no annual fee for the Citi Forward card.

Citi Forward for College Students

The Citi Forward for College Students is similar to Citi Forward in that you can reduce your interest rate with good behavior (same terms: .25% interest rate reduction up to 8 times). Same 0% APR for 7 months on purchases and balance transfers.

However there are some differences in the amount of signup points: 3,500 point signup bonus when you spend $250 within 3 months of card receipt. The 2,500 “go paperless” bonus points and 100 “on-time payment / within credit limit” bonus points per billing period are the same.

There is also no annual fee for the Citi Forward card.

Citi mtvU Platinum Select Visa for College Students

Citi’s mtvU Platinum Select Visa for College Students offers a creative rewards program for students. Students not only earn points for purchases and paying on time, but also earn points for getting good grades.

Grade-based points can be earned twice a year, and are measured by GPA – the higher the GPA, the more rewards points you earn. A 2.50 – 2.99 GPA earns you 250 points. Get a 3.00 – 3.49 GPA and you double that at 500 points. A 3.50 – 3.99 GPA earns you 750 points, and at a 4.00 GPA you hit the jackpot with 2,000 points.

In addition to these points, you earn 5 points for every dollar for purchases at book stores, record stores, restaurants, motion picture theaters, and video entertainment rental stores – things the typical college student would seem to like. Everything else earns 1 point for every dollar spent. In addition, you can earn 25 bonus points every billing cycle if you pay at least your minimum payment on time and don’t go over your credit limit.

Points can also be used to pay off student loan principal. As a general rule, I would not advocate spending to earn points to pay down one form of debt only to accrue another, but this is a nice benefit on regular expenses.

Citi mtvU offers 0% Intro APR for up to 7 months on purchases and balance transfers. There is no annual fee.

Citi AT&T Universal Business Rewards Card

And for those typically a little bit past college student age, Citi offers the Citi AT&T Universal Business Rewards Card, a business rewards card with no annual fee that offers 5 Thank You rewards points for every $1 spent on eligible AT&T products and services purchases from AT&T. Card holders can also earn 3 rewards points on eligible business purchases at certain office supply merchants, gas stations, and professional services.

Citi AT&T Universal Business Rewards Card card holders can redeem points for air, travel, statement credit, gift cards, and merchandise. You can also have additional cards for your employees with credit limits that you set.

Note: Offers change frequently; please be sure to check the offer website to ensure all details and information are correct.
